Animal production is central to food systems in developing countries, and animal health underpins production and productivity. This presentation will explore how animal health contributes to improving resource efficiency, strengthening resilience, and securing social equity of food systems to ensure food security and nutrition. It will examine the role in international development for a framework such as ecosystem health (‘ecohealth’) or ‘one health’ — across human health, animal health and environmental health — and for animal health within this. It will use examples that illustrate that despite the challenges of working in such teams, they are needed in international development — both in sustainable agricultural development and in conservation and biodiversity — and that animal health is well placed to help meet these challenges.
