Anaesthesia of the dyspnoeic patient is a relatively common challenge faced in veterinary practice. Whether it be trauma, pleural disease, pulmonary disease or upper airway obstruction, management of the dypnoeic patient requires rapid airway control with minimal stress. This talk aims to review the causes of hypoxaemia. And the clinical and physiologic responses to hypoxaemia. It will also review pre-operative stabilization and oxygen therapy. It will also cover rapid sequence induction combinations and analgesia in the dysnpoeic patient. As well as preparation for and management of the difficult airway including tracheostomy. Finally it will also review respiratory monitoring including pulse oximetry, capnography and blood gas analysis.
